hey Mrs Jones!,
"Oh... well, about life being a game and all. And how you should play it according to the rules." " He just kept talking about life being a game and all. You know."
Holden then thinks "Game, my ass. Some game. If you get on the side where all the hot-shots are, then it's a game, all right- I'll admit that. But if you get on the other side, where there aren't any hot-shots, then what's a game about it? Nothing. No game."
This made me laugh and think of the few times you've told me something similar. I think that's why this book is a classic because Holden gets fed up hearing the same things that everyone gets fed up hearing.
Touche. Please understand Emma, I do not ENJOY playing the game all the time and I certainly hate feeling like I am preaching it to youths that are still so ready to change the world and do things "my way". I feel like I am stifling them. But on the same hand, I don't want you to look back and feel deceived that I never let you in on something that would've saved me some tears or shouts or even money. You are one of "those" that will still do it "her way." And that's cool because we need a few of "those" to make things happen. For the changes you want to happen to actually happen, the rest of us will "play the game" it will just be (hopefully) your game by some rules you create to better us as a society.
ReplyDeletehahaha well I highly doubt I will ever be motivated enough to buck the system and actually change society for the better but thank you. O and I'm extremely happy that we're reading Catcher because I had forgotten how much I loved Salinger's style of writing. Most of it is very short and choppy.
