Me and Troy's Summer project
I don't know how many of you actually still check in on this, but whatever haha. Some of you guys asked me to post this on the blog awhile ago, and I never did. I was just looking through my Youtube videos and saw this one. Kinda weird to look back on, but this is what me and Troy did for the summer assignment last year. Enjoy hahaha.

Mrs. Jones
Hey Mrs. Jones:) hope your summer is going well!
So for Mrs. Moons/ AP Lit summer project, we have to have an editor read our paper and sign it. Most of my family I can read off anything and they say its great. So I was going to see if you could read my paper when I'm done. I've started the first one and will soon be able to start the analysis of comparison and constrast of the two novels we have to read. So If you could be my editor that would be pretty dang awesome:) but if not, totally understand, because its summer. Anyways, I'll check back on the blog and if i dont get a reply, then I'll try emailing you.

Okay so I called collegeboard and got access to your scores. We did well. AVG Score: 3.275 which means most of you passed.
3 Fives
10 Fours (this is amazing to me! )
7 Threes
7 Twos (this is the hardest number to deal with)
1 One
So 13/28 should have no problem getting college credit for your efforts. 7 more of your (20/28 could potentially get college credit depending on which college you attend). These are impressive stats. I am proud of all of you, no matter what your score is. If you gave it your best, if you improved your writing and analysis of writing AT ALL then your work was not for naught. Congrats!

AP Scores...online?
Ms. Jones,
Word on the street is that teachers now have access to AP scores online beginning this summer. My friends in California said this was true, and I looked it up and found out that the College Board has indeed started this program. Anyhow, I wanted to confirm that you are able to view our scores online.

yeah!!
ok i did get through to mrs moon. i am very happy aboout that. Guess what miss J!!!!!! i got a 10 on my SAT essay and i improved my score over 200 points and i didnt even study for this one but there is still alot of room for improvement. i am up at 2:08 in the morning reading 1984, the book is has a tendancy to be my secret lullaby (if i spelt it correctly) but i love English so i intend to get it done. So i downloaded the read alopng track so when i read i can hear a voice and that helps me to stay awake. I love the idea of annotating tho it def helps you to remeber and jot down any question that you may have through out the book. Oh back to my SAT i scored the highest on my critical reading, shocking and the least on math hahaha which is kinda backwards.well any way enough about me how is your summer? and are you missing your APers yet? lol! to all the rest of my fellow classmates how is your summer going? When are we all going to hang out as a class? We need to do it in July somtime maybe the end or so. but i am going to get back to my reading.
P.S
i am loving the big apple!!!!!

Creepy Guy in the Club
Remember, 4th blockers, when Destini was doing the "creepy guy in the club" dance? Well. I found him! XD
The whole video, guys. It's a match made in heaven.
http://www.youtube.com/watch#!v=qX9XpF81SNo&playnext_from=TL&videos=sBZdxR1Y8r0
I linked the subtitled video, because it would shock me if any of us spoke Turkish. =p
I actually really like the song! Tarkan just needs dance lessons.

Guess what? ...Chicken butt.
No But really, I made a 1750 on my SAT's without studying!
I know "Think how much better you could have done if you studied."
I'll study before I retake it, but I'm really happy.
And I just though you should know I did kick ass on the english comprehension and writing skills and made a 10 on my essay :D
So the moral of the story is that you don't have to study to do well on the SAT.

Book Club!
The first meeting of AP Lang's book club, although others are very welcome, will take place on June 14 at 2 'o'clock at Barnes & Noble. Everybody can bring one or two titles that you have either read or want to read for consideration.
A book club is something that requires a certain amount of commitment, so please decide if you are willing to dedicate the time needed beforehand.
Thanks, guys! I'm looking forward to see you all. =)

Holden you're my man, if you cant do it, no one can.
Clever title:) I regret to inform all the Holden haters out there, that you are wrong. I'm so sorry for your loss and I hope that you can learn to love the character of Catcher in the Rye. Honestly, how can you not like him? He's genius, oh and the red hunting cap symbolizes Allie's hair or thats what I think and its his safety blanket.

Catcher in the Rye!!!!!!!!
hey Mrs Jones!,
"Oh... well, about life being a game and all. And how you should play it according to the rules." " He just kept talking about life being a game and all. You know."
Holden then thinks "Game, my ass. Some game. If you get on the side where all the hot-shots are, then it's a game, all right- I'll admit that. But if you get on the other side, where there aren't any hot-shots, then what's a game about it? Nothing. No game."
This made me laugh and think of the few times you've told me something similar. I think that's why this book is a classic because Holden gets fed up hearing the same things that everyone gets fed up hearing.

this weekends essay.
ms. Jones,
You may have made this clear before and I might not have heard it. But is the essay on "The Indisposable Opinion" supposed to be typed in MLA and turned in as a final draft? Or are we just supposed to have it written out on paper to work with it some more?

The Catcher in the Rye
So, I went out to trusty Barnes and Noble and picked up The Catcher in the Rye since were about to start reading it. I hope this book is good, but to be honest, all i've heard about it is that its horrible, not to mention its already on my bad side, because the guy who murdered John Lennon was carrying it in his coat pocket. Which makes me want to go in the book and shoot the main character, because that is the guy he said he was being. But then again we all know that the guy who killed John Lennon was a government agent, sent to portray a crazy man, so maybe my vendetta against this book has no foundation. Hmm, I guess i'll have to wait and see.
P.S. I dont want to become part of the Catcher Cult, if you have read the novel King Dork by a dude name Frank Portman then you know what i'm talking about, if not, go read King Dork.

Language!!????????
Hey Ms. Jones how accepting are you of curse words in this little narrative thing? I don't think I'm being too vulgar or inappropriate with my language but i don't want you to get upset. But if you do i will call it my diction and say the tone of my piece is vulgar and inappropriate.
Saturday, April 3, 2010
Maybe??
Ms. Jones, are you dead?
If so that sucks, and I'm sad.
Most likely you're not.
Hopefully my narrative doesn't suck so much that you didn't have the words to comment.
Or maybe its the reverse. It is so good that its just ineffable and you're just in awe of my awesomeness.
I like that one the best.
Well have a great Easter.
And be careful on those bikes ;P

Narrative
Mrs. Jones, finished my narrative, but the only thing im not sure of is how do we set up a conversation, where I have myself talking, another one talking, but also while this conversation is going im having thoughts about the conversation, oh and action. I'll give you what im talking about. mind you with just this conversation my narrative probably looks and sounds like crap, but honest its not that bad, I dont think. Oh, theres a couple choice language words, I know you said they were allowed, but I want to make sure, but this is really what I thought. Oh sorry this is so long. I dont have my paper written with the me/the evil one semi coloned, I have it like that so you can better understand it
me: Oh, did you know my grandma?
the evil one: yes, I did.
me: well, whats your name, because im not sure if she ever mentioned you before
the evil one: well she had a special nickname for me, but you can just call me patricia.
holds out her hand for me to shake
my thoughts: I would rather lick the bottom of an inner city trashcan, then touch your hand and I know what nickname I would have for you.
me: Oh, well isn't that sweet, yeah me and my grandma, we may have lived far away from one another, but we were really close and im pretty sure she never mentioned you
the evil one: really well thats a shame
my thought: im pretty damn well pleased she never mentioned you, because I hope she didnt know that you were fucking her drunkard of a husband, while she could barely stand
my suggary honey dripped voice left me, replaced with the most hateful, sarcastic voice that has ever came from my mouth
me: No, no its really not a shame, she probably never mentioned you, because you didnt make much of an impact on her life or any others for that matter other than Howard here, im sure you helped him through his grief so much in the bedroom.
I heard gasps all around me and the faces of adults held a look that to me just told me that I succeeded in everything I had set out to do and no other face told me more then the blond women in front of me. I turned and gave a mutinous look to my grandpa and turned back to the women and smirked at her and barely above a whisper, just so she and only she could hear what I was saying called her a whore. Then resumed the sweet innocent smile that I approached her with as a last parting note to remember me by and flounced off.

Spring Break
Has been relaxing.
Got back from Asheville the other day with Nelson.
Why is everyone calling you Moma Jones?
And the narrative its just an expression of something important that happened to us right?
I like mine a lot, but i don't know if its okay. So here's a piece of it if you don't ming perusing through it;
The things you think you’d miss upon on a plane ride across a vast sea to a new and unforgiving land are not actually what you miss. Eight hours is a long drawn out time to be in such close quarters with a woman whom you have everlasting abhorrence for. The flight probably had one of the largest effects on my estrangement from my immediate family overall. My anger filled me and I became more and more passionate the more I thought. Pray tell, what else may I have done on this journey? Clouds passed clouds that passed clouds. Everything spun. A myriad of emotions churned inside of me, and so ended the life of mine I once loved so much. My joy and youthful vigor, any resemblance of a child, whipped away with winds pushing 500miles per hour. Life had always been hard, but that day was bitterly harsh.

Homegirl just got back from a chorus trip to DC. Pretty cool. Futuristic looking hotels next to Greek-style temples is probably the coolest thing to have in a city, ever. Annoying chick copied everything I said like it was her idea, but otherwise, good trip. Booked it to the bus in freezing weather in a t-shirt. Awesome. Saw Abe Lincoln. Win.
I haven't started my narrative. Haha? Can a deadline be my conflict?
Easter is coming up! I am slowly cleaning up my house and planning to make glazed plum-raspberry kuchen for an appetizer, even though I'm competeing against about five or six professional chefs. A girl can try. XD
What are my lovely Apers doing for Easter?

Went to my sister's house (awesome) and read magazines (awesome) and watched the first Harry Potter (not awesome) and she cooked dinner (awesome). That's more awesomes than not, so today was a win.

First official day of Spring Break for me. I was awakened by a frantic call from my second job at the spa wanting me to come in so I hopped in the shower and then when I got out I was greeted by a second call saying they didn't need me to come in. All showered and no place to go.
Ending up meeting my ma for lunch at J Mike's all the way in Monkey Junction. Ran a sandwich by a hungry friend's house. Now I'm back at the house because my dog needed parenting (you know, feeding, watering, letting her out). All in all, it was a good, relaxed day but with enough stuff that I had to get up, get showered and leave the house. I am sure at least one of the days to come will not involve all three of those things. I will test just how lazy I can be.

vlogbrothers.
Okayyyy, so since no one ever ever never comes on here anymore, i'll just keep posting nonessential posts that I find highly important to myself, maybe thats conceited, rephrase, i'll just keep posting nonessential posts that I find highly important to the smart people in our AP Classes, question is though, is everyone in our AP Classes intelligent, just a thought, and what exactly describes intelligence? just another thought. Anyway back to what I should have wrote eight sentences ago, Wesley keeps posting these videos with this Hank dude that makes me laugh extremely hard, so upon investigation I found out that there is a website called nerdfighter.com that is wonderfully great dedicated to the English studies and blogging about basically anything. Check it out if you're cool enough to do so! Oh and Wesley are you a member, I want to find you on there!

So. What did you think about Mrs. Davis's speech today? Was it helpful? This isn't necessarily looking for you to rant, but what concerns do you have? Let's talk.

He talks a little too fast, but it's an interesting study of the big eyes on the billboard of the Great Gatsby and what Fitzgerald might have meant by including them in the story. I figured if anyone else was to appreciate this video, it would be you lovely bloggers.
And Ms. Jones! We love you and hope you feel better! =)

I had a movie weekend!
Okay so this saturday, which was yesterday, I saw two movies. One was An Education and the other was Dear John. An Education was brilliant, no wonder it won so many awards! I fell in love with all the french music that was the soundtrack as well. Now on the other hand Dear John was just repulsive and stupid and vile and every other word associated with bad. I wasted ten dollars on it.

So..I know we just got a class plant (Audrey) but I have had the opportunity to get a small fish tank. I have cleaned it out and it's ready to go (I think) if the class would like to purchase a fish. I will buy food, etc., but I need help with the fish itself and remembering to feed it. The only fish I am opposed to is a betta. I don't want one of those. It could hold about 2-3 small fish. Or one larger fish (larger like a silver dollar). Whaddayathink?

Literary Characteristics
Realism-
Realism was a literary movement in the last half of the 19th century in which writers opposed much of what the Romantics had stood for. Most critics give the dates 1850's to 1880's as the dates for the strongest examples of Realism in Western literature. (You'll notice that there is some overlap between the dates for Romanticism and Realism.)
Its Characteristics-
The age of Realism is characterized by some recognizable ideas held by most of the thinkers and writers of the day. These ideas listed below are generalizations, and--as with most generalizations--need to be seen the the light of a particular piece of literature in order to present any verifiable detail.
1. Whereas the age of the Romantics valued the exceptional, the genius, and the uncommon individual, the age of Realism values members of the middle class.
2. Whereas the age of the Romantics valued the contribution of the genius and imagination of the writer/poet, the Realists wanted to de-emphasize the contribution of the writer and thought writers should "objectively" see contemporary life as the material for their writing. They attempted to keep themselves as writers from coming between the reader and the life they presented in their art.
3. Whereas the age of the Romantics valued the details of the present moment as a way to transcend the moment and the present world, the age of Realism values the surface details, the everyday life, and the common conduct of middle class individuals. They do this with the purpose of creating the illusion of reality. Herik Ibsen said that the effect he was seeking in his Realistic plays was to make "the spectator feel as if he were actually sitting, listening, and looking on events happening in real life" (Wilkie & Hurt 971).
4. While the Romantics valued the emotional, the intuitive, and the feelings and insight of the innocent child and the genius, the Realists explore the ethical choices made by common middle class individuals and the effects and consequences these ethical choices have on the lives of their middle class heroes.
5. While the Romantics value nature as a way of seeing God and man, the Realists question the existence, or at least the importance of, God and discount the beliefs of organized Christian religions. Instead of seeking transcendence as the Romantics did, the Realists focused on ethical choices and morality in the life of middle class individuals, often without supporting Christian beliefs.
Naturalism-
was a literary movement taking place from 1865 to 1900 that used detailed realism to suggest that social conditions, heredity, and environment had inescapable force in shaping human character. It was depicted as a literary movement that seeks to replicate a believable everyday reality, as opposed to such movements as Romanticism or Surrealism, in which subjects may receive highly symbolic, idealistic, or even supernatural treatment. Naturalism is the outgrowth of Realism, a prominent literary movement in mid-19th-century France and elsewhere. Naturalistic writers were influenced by the evolution theory of Charles Darwin.[1] They believed that one's heredity and social environment determine one's character. Whereas realism seeks only to describe subjects as they really are, naturalism also attempts to determine "scientifically" the underlying forces (e.g. the environment or heredity) influencing the actions of its subjects. Naturalistic works often include uncouth or sordid subject matter; for example, Émile Zola's works had a frankness about sexuality along with a pervasive pessimism. Naturalistic works exposed the dark harshness of life, including poverty, racism, sex, prejudice, disease, prostitution, and filth. As a result, naturalistic writers were frequently criticized for being too blunt.
Its Characteristics-
1. Whereas the Realists portrayed middle class characters in their work, the Naturalists portrayed the lives of working class individuals and believed that members of the working class were controlled, oppressed, and brutalized by the societies in which they lived.
2. Whereas the Realists explored the ethical choices of middle class characters, the Naturalists believed that their working class characters struggled just to remain alive in a way similar to the way Darwin saw animals struggling for survival in the physical world.
3. Whereas the Realists focused on ethical choices and morality in the contemporary life of middle class individuals, often without supporting Christian beliefs, the Naturalist often portrayed working class individuals as animals struggling against an inhuman and unsympathetic universe where they competed for scarce resources in the same way as animals did in the physical world around them.

Elephants
Ms. Jones I can't stop thinking about what we were talking about in class the other day; about the elephant killers! I'm so upset. I wish we could skip it.
Tonights homework
Hey, I was staying at my dads this past week and left my english book at my house and I have no way of getting it by tonight. What should I do?
Okay, just made this connection. In looney toons (in many cartoon's actually). Whenever someone got hit really hard, or was just really stupid, they would pose questions to George. Ex. "which way did he go George?" I don't know maybe I'm doing a bad job explaining this. But I think it may have some correlation with Of Mice and Men and Lenn. I don't know, probaly explain it better tomorow.
hiiiii everybody, today was my first day of school SO much different..each student is given a macbook :D and my english class is really serious, too serious..we're reading The Things They Carried and i basically have to finish it in one day, ever read it?
miss you guys!
oh yeah, PS the inventor of sparknotes went to this school, he's my hero

These are the questions I would like to address tomorrow. (if we haven't already touched on them). Just a heads up so you can mull them over tonight/tomorrow and hopefully we can have a wonderful discussion.
Discussion Questions for OMAM
Was it moral for George to kill Lennie? How do you feel about euthanasia in general?
How did the time period influence the plot and characters?
This novel employs foreshadowing; where, why, and how effectively was this technique used?
Discuss Steinbeck’s use of symbolism.
If Stienbeck is providing commentary on friendship, what is he saying?
How many types of “outcasts” are found in this novel? Why does Steinbeck use all of these instead of concentrating on one or two?
What is the importance of the title?
